Research Overview

Our lab is interested in measurement issues in psychological and educational testing. We specialize in item response theory and its applications to large-scale testing programs. Specific topics of interest include measurement invariance, test/item bias, computerized adaptive testing, cognitive diagnosis, classification accuracy and consistency and so on. In addition to developing new methodologies, we are very interested in applying advanced statistical methods to substantive areas, such as health outcome research. Our members are associated with American Educational Research Association, International Association of Computerized Adaptive Testing, Psychometric Society and National Council of Measurement in Education.

  • Congratulations to Can Shao, who published a first-author article in Psychometrika, entitled "Detection of Test Speededness Using Change-Point Analysis".

  • Congratulations to Quinn Lathrop, who defended his dissertation in the summer of 2015, and joined NWEA as a research scientist.

  • Congratulations to Can Shao, who received the 2015 Graduate Student Travel Award from the Psychometric Society.

  • Dr. Ying (Alison) Cheng received the 2014 NSF CAREER award to work on computerized adaptive testing on AP Statistics. The award comes with $600,000 research grant for five years.   • Jeff Patton defended his dissertation in the summer of 2014, and became an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.

  • Dr. Ken Kelley and Dr. Ying (Alison) Cheng won Best Paper Award from European Congress of Methodology. The award winning paper entitled "Estimation and Confidence Interval Formation for Reliability Coefficients of Homogeneous Measurement Instruments" was published in Methodology in 2012. The best-paper award is a bi-annual award given to the best article published in this journal in the last two years.

  • New Book edited by Dr. Ying (Alison) Cheng and Dr. Hua-Hua Chang, entitled "Advancing Methodologies to Support Both Summative and Formative Assessments" is published by Information Age Publishing. Information can be found at Dr. Ying (Alison) Cheng 's webpage.

  • Congratulations to Can Shao, who was the lead author on the award-winning poster. The poster entitled "Anchor selection embedded mediated MIMIC model for understanding DIF mechanism" won first place at the 2014 AERA Division D Research Gala.
